The Optimist has been the basic training boat for Thai youth sailing programs since 1970. The Junior Sailing Squadron of Thailand ("JSST") was founded in 1977. Junior sailing courses for young Thai skippers have been conducted every year, under the sponsorship of the Royal Thai Navy, Royal Varuna Yacht Club and Thai Sailing Academy. A number of Thailand's national champions and regional Games gold-medallist were former graduates of JSST Optimist training courses.
